Portraits Through the Wormhole – Space & Time in Wales
Back in July, I found myself in the Welsh hills near Crickhowell (KRICK-how-ell), surrounded by friends, tents, smoke machines, and an army of time travelers, aliens, and futuristic explorers. The occasion? My friend Bruce’s 50th birthday—a “Space & Time Travel” themed weekend that doubled as the perfect excuse to pull out the camera.
I didn’t go there to photograph the party or to take portraits, however the party was an incredibly creative-sharing space and these images were my contribution. And what a setting for it: rolling fields, moody skies, and the centuries-old stone wall of a Welsh farmhouse that became my makeshift backdrop. The costumes were phenomenally fun, my fellow party goers were very suitably attired and when you’re surrounded by that kind of creativity, it’s impossible not to want to capture it.
The setup was simple: no lights, no assistants, no pressure. Just pulling people aside in the middle of the fun for a quiet(ish) moment and a quick portrait. Some paused mid-dance, others right before grabbing another drink. The energy was brilliant, and everyone brought something different to the frame.
The weekend wasn’t just about fancy dress—it was a rare gathering of old friends, some of whom hadn’t seen each other in years. Bruce pulled us all together, and the result was more than a party. It was connection, chaos, and a reminder that time really is a funny thing.
For me, it was also a chance to make something personal out of it. These portraits aren’t just of characters in costume—they’re new and old friends stepping into a moment, giving me a minute of stillness in the middle of the madness. And I loved every second of it.
